Change Your Attitude – Change Your Life!

One of the things I’m proud of is that people who know me will usually say that I have a positive mental attitude. The reason for this is because over the years I have found that my attitude makes a huge affect on not only my immediate life but my future and the outcomes I receive as well. When my attitude is positive my life seems to go well but when my latitude is negative, well it’s not so good. Sometimes I struggle with keeping a positive mental attitude, as was the case this last week. I struggled a little and had to use some of these ways to adjust my attitude.

Maybe you or somebody you know has had the experience of having a slightly negative attitude also. If you have, then maybe these attitude adjustment tips might be helpful. I’ve found that when I’m focused on doing what I’m suggesting here my attitude really changes for the better. So enjoy, and I hope you have a wonderful week!

J. Oppenheimer once told this story, “David received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren’t expletives were, to say the least, rude.

David tried hard to change the bird’s attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, and doing anything he could think of to try and set a good example. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird got worse. He shook the bird and the bird got angry and ruder.

Finally, in a moment of desperation, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawking and kicking and screaming. Then suddenly, there was quiet. David was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto David’s extended arm and said: “I’m sorry that I might have offended you with my language and actions and ask your forgiveness. I will endeavor to correct my behavior”.

David was astounded at the bird’s change in attitude and was just about to ask what had made such a drastic change, when the parrot continued: ‘May I ask what the chicken did?’”

A lot of times we start seeing life a certain way and, as a result, we, like the parrot, begin behaving in a certain manner. As a result we can begin acting in ways that are not very empowering and make our lives dull and unhappy.

The good news is that to change your life, to make it better, often all you need is an slight attitude adjustment. You see, a better tomorrow could start with something as simple as your changing your attitude. Your perspectives, the way you see the world, has a huge effect on your overall happiness. Your attitude can affect your success as well. So by changing your attitude you can change your world.

Meditation 101

I was having a discussion with my girlfriend and we started talking about meditation. Since she doesn’t practice meditation I found that she had many of the common misconceptions about meditation that many people I’ve met have. And since I consider her way above average I figured that an article that was about Meditation 101 might help those of you that have never practiced meditation regularly decide to give it a try.

Since regularly practicing meditation exercises on a daily basis I have found that my life is calmer and that I am much more (usually) in control. When people tell me how calm I am I have to chuckle inside because it certainly hasn’t always been like this for me. That’s why I wrote this article. It’s for those of you, who may, like me, who struggle from time to time staying calm and in control in certain situations. If you are struggling a little with this then maybe this week’s article will help.

Now on to this week’s article…

Changing Your Life by Learning to Meditate

“Meditation brings wisdom; lack of mediation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.” – The Buddha

Do you want to know something that will absolutely change your life for the better that costs absolutely nothing and takes less than 30 minutes a day? It’s practicing meditation. The real trick is you have to practice every day.

What is Meditation Anyway?

Meditation is a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Some of the benefits you can receive from regular mediation are increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life.

Do I Have to Join a Special Religion or Group?

Some people believe that in order to really meditate you have to be a monk or mystic. While if you are seeking enlightenment this type of lifestyle can be helpful, you definitely don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. Other people believe that you have to belong to certain spiritual disciplines such as Buddhism or Hinduism in order to meditate. This just isn’t true, in fact, just about every spiritual discipline has their own form of meditation, it’s just most people don’t practice them. Also, you don’t have to own a special meditation room to practice. Sometimes I meditate in my living room and so can you!

Hot Baths and Other Ways to Relieve Your Stress and Anxiety

“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.” – Unknown

I was talking with a client about meditation exercises the other day. He told me that he schedules 40 minutes every morning for meditation exercises and then it’s off to the gym. In fact it’s exactly 40 minutes and his meditation time is complete, whether the meditation exercises are complete or not. He told me if he tried to meditate longer it actually stresses him out because that’s all the time it has in his schedule. That’s kind of funny, getting stressed out about taking too much time to meditate.

I told him the good news is that he at least takes the time to meditate. Only, maybe he should give himself a little slack in his very crowded schedule. We’re all like my client, well almost. Most people don’t take the time to meditate every day but we all really need to take the time to relax. When you don’t, you end up getting stressed out and it can even make you sick.

William James once said, “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” Your ability to choose one thought over another comes as a result of you being able to relax.

While there are many methods to help you to relax, in our fast paced society we often look for the newest fad or the newest medical solution. The problem with this approach is that drugs are addicting and the newest methods can often cost you a pretty penny. But there are also many methods that can help you relieve your stress and anxiety that cost absolutely nothing and they are so easy to do.

Here is a list of 10 ideas to relieve your stress and anxiety that will cost you absolutely nothing:

How to improve your brain power

“The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” – Robert Frost

I went to the kitchen this morning and looked around for a few moments trying to remember why I was there. It used to happen to me more often than it does now, but it still irritates me slightly when it does. Does this ever happen to you? If it does, read on and let me explain to you how I improved my memory and concentration by doing a few simple things every day.

Your brain is your central operating system. It controls involuntary activities such as respiration, digestion, and heartbeat. These involuntary activities are under the control of your autonomic nervous system which is a function of your subconscious mind. Your brain also controls other functions, such as grabbing juice from the fridge (which is what I figured out I was there for) at a more conscious level.

Your brain also controls other “higher order” conscious activities like reasoning, abstraction, and thought. These are the functions that set humans apart from other species. Studies have found that the human brain is superior in these areas to the brain of any other living species known to humankind.

How to Live Simply

Life today is a lot faster. As life gets faster it also becomes more complicated. As life gets more complicated it also becomes more stressful. This just isn’t good for you at all!

As Confucius once said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Life can be a lot simpler if we allow it to be. The problem is we just keep filling our lives up with more and more stuff. The question is if we keep filling up our lives with stuff how can we ever focus on what matters most?

Many people, and maybe you are one of them, are running around trying to squeeze everything they can out of life. The facts are they’d be a whole lot happier and healthier if they took the time to be mindful, to smell the roses and savor the wonderful life around them.

If you would like to slow down and live more mindfully, here are 5 tips you can use to simplify your life starting today:

1. Eliminate Clutter.

Relieve Your Stress and Anxiety With Yoga and Meditation

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” – the Buddha

Each year millions of Americans go to their doctors for stress and anxiety relief. As a result doctors around the country regularly prescribe medications such as Prozac and Zoloft to these patients. In some states where medical marijuana is legal, doctors prescribe smoking pot as a method of counteracting everyday stress. Medical marijuana enthusiasts tout using pot because it is a “natural” drug and therefore “better” for you than pharmaceuticals. Although I don’t have any quarrel with medical marijuana, I’m not so sure about that. Although these medications can mask the symptoms you experience, they do little to relieve the causes of the stress and anxiety you experience regularly.

The simple facts are that stress and anxiety will always be part of your life. Using drugs to numb your mind from reality in order to live in society seems to me to be more of an escape than anything else. So what can you do? Recent studies have shown that yoga and meditation just might do the trick.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Stefan Hofmann, a psychology professor at Boston University, reviewed 39 studies on the practice of yoga and meditation. He concluded that this type of therapy both relieved stress and anxiety while improving mood. Although it doesn’t work for everyone – and what does – MRI scans of patients’ brains actually showed shifts in their mental activity.
